NEW P. AND O. TANKER

Earlier Ships Recalled

The launching of a new P. and 0. Group tanker, the Orama, at Port Glasgow recently, revived memories of two earlier Orient liners which bore this name. The first Orama was built in 1911, and until the beginning of World War I was the fastest mail ship in the Eng-land-Australia service. In 1914 she was requisitioned for service as a store ship. As H.M.S. Orama she sighted and was responsible for the sinking of the German supply ship Navarra in the South Atlantic, in November that year. In 1917 Orama was torpedoed and sunk while on convoy escort duties off the south of Ireland.

The second Orama, built in 1924, operated as a passenger liner on the Australian run. Like her predecessor she was sunk by enemy action. This happened in May, 1940, while she was serving as a troop carrier during the evacuation of Narvik,

The new 61,000 tons deadweight tanker was built by Lithgows, Ltd., of Port Glasgow. It is the first of a series of four tankers which will operate on a 10-year time charter to Texaco (Panama), Inc.
