Mr R. J. Roberts Elected Paparua Chairman
Three members of the Paparua County Council were nominated to fill the vacancy of chairman caused by the death of Mr J. H. Weaver. Cr. R. J. Roberts, who has been a member for nearly 20 years, was elected by six votes to five in a two-way contest with Cr. J. V. Barclay. Cr. H. W. Bennett, who was also nominated, declined to accept the nomination.
Cr. Roberts was nominated by Cr. R. F. Lochhead. The
seconder was Cr. W. L. Ragg. .Cr. Roberts is the council’s
longest serving member and is one of the three representatives of the Hornby riding. He is chairman of the Central Canterbury Power Board, a member of the Hornby Licensing Trust, and represents his own and the Riccarton Borough Council on the North Canterbury Hospital Board. By-election Date A by-election will be held in the Sockbum riding on June 20 to fill the vacancy on -the council caused by Mr Weaver’s death. The supplementary roll will close on May 22 and nominations will dose on Junte 2 at noon.
The citizenship ceremony, which was to have been held last Monday, will now be held on June 15.
