RECORD FOR BAILLIE
Victory In U.S. Race (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) LOS ANGELES, May 17. W. D.- Baillie, of New Zealand, made a final spurt in the 5000-metres race in the Los Angeles Coliseum Relays last night to win in a time of 13min 54.45ec.
The crowd of nearly 27,000 spectators applauded as Baillie played with the field, and then shot ahead of his nearest rival, a United States Marine, W. Mills.
The two pulled away from the field with four laps to go. Mills had a slight lead in the final lap before Baillie made his spurt. Baillie’s time bettered the relays record of 13min 57.35ec set up in 1963 by J. Beatty.
“I was flat for this race. I think it was because of the long trip to America,” said Baillie.
“I hope by .the time I run at Compton next month I’ll run into good enough shape to try for the record. Baillie is due to race against Bruce Kidd, of Canada, at Modesto, California, next week in the mile. He will then face Beatty and Kidd at Compton the following week.
