Whineray’s Team Wins Bright Jubilee Rugby

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, May 16. The third and final South African Rugby Union jubilee match provided another feast of spectacular play for a crowd of about 20,000 at Newlands today, In all, 15 tries were scored in 80 minutes play.

The Presidents XV, captained by New Zealand’s W. Whineray, beat the Outsiders XV, led by the Springbok, Abie Malan, by -44 points to 24 after leading 21-11 at half-time.

Whineray’s side finished with seven goals and three tries to three goals, two tries and one penalty goal by the opposition. Unfortunately, the match was marred by injuries to two of the South African threequarters, the winger J. Engelbrecht and the centre W. Labuschagne. Engelbrecht suffered torn muscles in his back and neck when tackled- by the Springbok F. Dupreez. He was taken off the field on. a stretcher. The injury will prevent Engelbrecht from being considered for selection for the international against Wales at Durban next Saturday. Labuschagne suffered an injured hamstring. The President’s XV was composed of South African backs and overseas forwards. The Outsiders XV had an allSouth African pack, and with one exception, an overseas back division.

Top Scorer The Springbok fly-half, K. Oxlee was the game’s individual star, scoring one and converting seven tries for a personal tally of 17 points. Whineray, captain of the All Blacks in the British Isles and France last winter, celebrated his last match overseas by scoring two tries for the President’s XV. Other tries for the President’s side Were scored by Engelbrecht, N. Smith (South Africa); J. Thornett (Australia), G.- Davis (Australia), A. Pask (Wales), C. Meads (New Zealand) and L. Wilson (South Africa). For the Outsiders, the former Springbok captain, Avril Malan, one of four additional players invited «for this match, scored two splendid tries. Other try-seorers for the Outsiders were F. du Preez, Abie Malan and D. Clarke (New Zealand). As full-back, Clarke also kicked three conversions and a long penalty goal to make his tally 12 points. N.Z. On Top

In all, 175 points have been scored in the three jubilee matches and there can be little doubt that the overseas

players invited to take part in these games enjoyed themselves. In today’s match it was the New Zealand players who

shaped best among the visitors. Clarke at full-back again proved a great favourite with the crowd and his prodigious touch-kicking earned him much applause. His penalty goal from 60 yards out was a joy.

Whineray played another great game and his two splendid tries came as a result of his great speed' and strength as he barged his way over to score. Meads had a good game and impressed with his hard running. Behind the scrum K. BriScoe showed his best display in the jubilee series. His service from the base of the scrum was neat and quick to the fly-half,. D. Watkins, of Wales, and he also showed a quick eye for the break. Australia’s J. Thornett capped a fine performance by scoring a good try and was a tower of strength in both the tight and the loose. Brief Stay

This was. Thornett’s last game in South Africa. He arrived here three months ago for a brief stay and turned out for the Cape Town club, Hamiltons. * D. Hughes, of Australia, had a couple of good runs on the wing but did not see as much of the ball as he might have. G. Davis, taken out of the pack to play on the wing after the injury to Engelbrecht and Labuschagne, ran with purpose in his unaccustomed position. Earlier, while playing on the flank, he looked tigerish in defence and was always dangerous in the loose. The teams were:— President’s XV—L. Wilson (S.A.), J. Engelbrecht (S.A.), J Gainsford (S.AJ, W. Labuschagne (S.A.), C. Dirksen (S.A.), K. Oxlee (S.A.), C. Smith (S A.),' W Whineray (N.Z.), R. Dawson (Ireland), 3. Thorpett (Australia), R.
