RUMBLING IN RUAPEHU
Scientists Seek Active Area
“The Press’’ Special Service WANGANUI, May 17.
Rumbles are coming from deep under Mount Ruapehu and scientists are predicting a build-up of volcanic activity. Steam has been coming from the Crater Lake over the last two weeks.
Mr R. D. Dibble, senior scientific officer of the Geophysics Division of the D.5.1.R., said, seismographs had recorded volcanic tremors from around the Chateau. They were strongest at the top of the Bruce road.
“The tremors are probably coming from a considerable' depth under , ground,” Mr Dibble said.- “We are not too sure yet what relation they have to Ruapehu.” Three seismographs have been installed on the mountain to augment the three already there. Mr Dibble said the activity appeared to resemble that recorded in 1961. This culminated in an ash eruption from Ngauruhoe.: “We are watching the situation,” Mr Dibble said. “It is possible that nothing more will happen than occurred in 1961. But we can’t be sure. “This time we hope to be able to locate the area of activity fairly accurately.
The Crater . Lake disappeared in a 1945 eruption, the first in recorded history. Ski fields . were covered in ash.
