MARITIME DISPUTE
Legal Talks In U.S. (N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 17. A 12-nation shipping conference In Washington yesterday failed to resolve a dispute with the United States over dual-rate shipping contracts. An official statement Issued by the American State Department at the end of two days of talks said merely that the participants had “a fruitful exchange of views with respect to the jurisdictional aspects of the contracts.”
The dispute arose on March 30 when the Federal Maritime Commission ordered foreign shipping conferences to rewrite dual-rate contracts with thejr exporters.
Under the contracts the conferences give exporters a 15 per cent discount if they exclusively use the ships of their member shipping lines.
