(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, May 17. The Northern Rhodesian conference In London has agreed on a new constitution under which the protectorate Will become the independent Republic of Zambia later
this year. Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, the Northern Rhodesian Prime Minister, who is expected to be the first president of the republic with firm executive powers, has nominated October 24—United Nations Day —as the independence date for his country and its three million people. Delegates said there were no objections at the conference to this date but the decision would be announced by Mr Sandys, the Colonial Secretary. Friday’s session was marked by another protest walk-out by the opposition African National Congress delegation —their third in 24 hours. Mr Harry Nkumbula, the Congress leader, and his two fellow - delegates withdrew from the conference room after the British and Northern Rhodesian Government delegations had rejected his demands for fresh elections before independence.
