FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation. —An extremely deep depression lies to the south of Macquarie Island, with a cold front moving towards the South Island. An anti-cyclone over south-east Australia extends a ridge of high pressure across the central Tasman. Forecast: Canterbury predominating, strong in exposed inland places; showers about the alps; elsewhere partly cloudy; a temporary change to fresh south-westerlies, with, isolated showers, is possible during the day;- moderate temperatures. Buller and Westland.—Winds from a westerly quarter, strong at times in exposed places; changeable and cool, with passing showers; thunderstorms are likely at times. Marlborough and Nelson.—Gusty west or north-west winds, strong in exposed places and possibly turning to southerlies for a time later in the day; partly cloudy and cool, with showers in the west of Nelson and a few showers at times elsewhere.
