Uneconomic Farms
Sir,—l appreciate that the Minister of Lands, in advocating the elimination of “uneconomic farms” is concerned for the common good. But there is a risk that the policy he advocates will get out of hand. A small farm can pay quite well, provided it is not overburdened with debt. Some of the so-called uneconomic farms are out-producing adjoining larger holdings by 50 per cent or more. Joining up farms will increase land prices. Watch the price of the small holdings rise, as they are divided up among large landholders. Many farms are termed uneconomic, simply because of too much borrowing or because of inefficient management. It is in ■ the country’s interests to have a balance of large and small holdings. If the State provides finance for large landholders to buy up smaller units, the farm worker seeking a start on his own will have had it.—Yours, etc.,
INTERESTED. Blenheim, May 17, 1964.
