Vietnam

Sir, —Since New Zealand has always been a leader for peaceful solutions, it seems surprising that we should now decide- on a course directly toward war, without making any effort to bring about a peaceful solution. There are two alternatives to “stepping up” the war in South Vietnam. One is to bring the matter before the United Nations and ask it to intervene, offering our troops as part of a peace-keeping force. The other is to call for the reconvening of the Geneva Powers that negotiated the end of the French Indo-China war in 1954 As many provisions of that settlement have been violated perhaps that would be wise. It would therefore be better to play the role of peacemaker and to refrain from sending troops to help escalate this war into a nuclear catastrophe:—Yours, etc., LOUISE ALDRICH. May 17, 1964.
