Few Aphides About
rpHE numbers of cereal apx hides trapped in all Canterbury farming districts continued to be low, relative to other years, the second report of the aphid and virus committee said this week.
In Blenheim, however, considerable numbers had been trapped in each of the last three weeks and farmers in this area would be well advised to delay sowing a little longer. Farmers in Canterbury would be taking little risk of early aphid attack if they proceeded with wheat sowing as soon as conditions were suitable, the report said. Crops now emerging could still be infested if late flights of aphides occurred. Trapping was being continued in all districts where autumn sowing was practised and advice on the need for spraying would be given if the need arose. Further reports would be issued.
