Regal Order Picked For Amberley Hurdles

Racing at Amberley today might start the same way as it did last year—with a win for Regal Order in the Brackenfield Hurdles.

Regal Order reached minor places in stronger fields than this at the last Grand National meeting not long before he was put aside.

Today he will be having his second race after a spell, and will be in more solid racing condition than most of his rivals.

William David, an openclass winner on the flat and a safe jumper, would, at best, have a second-to-none chance, but this will be his first race since last November, and he might not run a mile and three-quarters out quite as well as Regal Order. Last year the Riccarton trainer, G.‘ H. Murfitt, jun., saddled the winners of three of the six galloping races on the Amberley programme. The first of them was Vivien Robe, then a two-year-old, which won the Novice Stakes. Consistent Today Murfitt stands a good chance of winning the Novice Stakes again, this time with Debbie Marie, another two-year-old. Debbie Marie has been only once worse than fourth in five starts, and on that record she has earned an early victory. Waverley, a dashing frontrunning chestnut from Riccarton, might be too swift and strong for the others in the Amberley Cup. He has been developed and prepared for his racing by I. McClure, who will transfer the Isaac of York gelding to W. A. Welton’s stable when he leaves to settle in Melbourne soon. Versatile Waverley can win on the firm tracks, and runs just as well under winter conditions. His versatility makes him a sound prospect for immediate engagements. Waverley will be ridden by A. J. Stokes, who won the Ashburton double on Zinder and Waverley a fortnight ago. Stokes will ride Town Talk in the second leg, the Starky Memorial, today.

Town Talk’s form slumped at Riccarton at Easter, but he could come up well fresh, well enough to make a show against the form horses, Moorooka and Avast.

Best Prospect Scent could be South Canterbury’s best winning prospect today. She is equal top weight in the Glasnevin Handicap, a middle distance race for non-winners.

Scent shaped as if she would be able to master a bit of ground in finishing fast for third over seven furlongs at Ashburton. She is trained at Waimate by P. H. R. Andrews, and will be ridden by the successful Wingatui apprentice, J. R. Dowling. 11 a.m.— BRACKENFIELD HACK HURDLES, £300; 13f. 9069 Regal Order' (7) .. *9 10 7808 William David (1), K.
