RACING Golden Defaulter, Sir David To Fight Out Big ’Chase

"Th* Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, May 15. Unless the ground becomes so heavy as to rule out any except the real mudlarks, Golden Defaulter and Sir David may dispute the finish of the £2500 Waikato Steeplechase at Te Rapa tomorrow. If the weather turns very wet again there is no saying what the outcome of the race might be.

On footing that is not too deep, Golden Defaulter is a hurdler and steeplechaser of class but he has a dislike of very heavy ground and a handicap of 11-2 which will feecome a fair steadier if the going worsens.

Sir David looked good when he won twice over two miles and a half at the Auckland Autumn meeting, but there is a question whether he will get three miles through heavy ground. Two Years, 21 Pounds Golden Defaulter is a 10-year-old and he will be called on to give two years in age and 21 pounds in weight to Sir David. No Offence, the top-weight from Otaki, has 11-7. so he is required to give Sir David 261 b. No Offence and Golden Defaulter, which have Grand Nationals to their credit, and candidates like Baron’s Craig, Braemar, Prince Sylvan and Johnny Dee are old hands at steeplechasing, whereas Sir David had his first race over country when he won the Mangere Steeplechase on the first day of the Auckland Meeting on March 30. In the Mangere Steeplechase, Sir David outran and outjumped his opponents in a very fast gallop for the two miles and a half. He was even quicker the next week when he beat Johnny Dee in an open event. Sir David has had a couple of runs on the flat in the meantime. No Offence and Golden Defaulter who have not raced over country since the Grand National meeting at Riccarton in August, were allowed a preliminary for tomorrow’s event in the Waikato Hurdles last Saturday. No Offence did not make a showing but Golden Defaulter came fourth and that was with 12-0. Baron’s Craig from Awapuni won well in the Waikato Steeplechase last year and he is one of the most interesting candidates on that account. Johnny Dee, Prince Sylvan and Ringlock seem pretty ready and their good condition might have them close at the finish. The Waikato Steeplechase will be the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Good Sprinters Queenwood, Clarendon, Toureg, and Supreme Gold are among a crowd of good winter sprinters in the second leg, the Flying Mile. Each is likely to go well and a good light-weight might be Noranda. Tilly Light, one of the principals in the Waikato Hurdles, will have another meeting with Mireusonta. a beaten favourite in last week’s big race, when he tackles the Seddon Hurdles, the second of tomorrow’s jumping attractions. There will be an on-course double on the Winter Hurdles and the Tyler Memorial. The weather has cleared again after being showery, but the going will be holding.
