CARDIGAN BAY WINS EASILY AT YONKERS
Great Credit sth, Booed By Crowd (N.Z P.A -Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 14. Cardigan Bay, an odds-on favourite driven with supreme 'confidence, swept to an impressive victory in his American debut at Yonkers Raceway tonight. Though forced to race on the outside for the last five furlongs of the one mile race, the champion New Zealand gelding dashed away entering the home straight as the crowd of 23,395 cheered his performance.
Earlier, the Yonkers crowd had booed the New Zealand pacer Great Credit when he finished only fifth after being installed an odds-on favourite in the one mile David Lipton Memorial Pace.
The brilliance of Cardigan Bay made up to some extent for the failure of Mr N. Simpson’s Great Credit, who was odds-on favourite at 3/4. Cardigan Bay, also odds-on at 3/5, won by two and threequarter lengths and ran the mile on a sloppy track in 2min 5.3 sec. Royal Rick was second, with a neck to Josedale Go Lucky and half a length to the fourth horse, Irish Napoleon. Cardigan Bay paid 3.30 dollars for a 2 dollar win ticket, 3.20 dollars for a place (first or second) and 2.80 dollars for show (first, second or third). Cardigan Bay's trainer, S. Dancer said afterwards: “He
ran real nice, very good, perfect.” Dancer said the horse had trained perfectly for the race but he had been somewhat concerned about the state of the track tonight. “It was really bad. I don’t think he’s ever raced under these conditions before,” he said. “But he handled it well, real good.” Asked if he still thought the eight-year-old son of the American sire Hal Tryax was still worth the 100,000 dollars (£44,426) he paid for him on behalf of an American syndicate, Dancer said: “Yes, sure.” In tonight’s event, Cardigan Bay’s opposition was not quite of the class he can expect in the three-race International Series which starts at Yonkers next Thursday night with the 50.000 dollar (£22,320) International Pace of a mile and a half.
In these events Cardigan Bay will probably meet the brilliant American four-year-old Overtrick, considered the best horse produced in the
United States since Adios Butler. Dancer indicated that he thought Cardigan Bay had a great chance in the big test ahead. “You never know, he just might win the three events,” he said. Forced Wide Driven by the New Zealand trainer, C. R. Berkett, Great Credit began speedily but was unable to muster enough speed to get to the lead and was forced to race one horse wide for the entire journey. He was in second place until the field turned into the stretch and hung on gamely but the extra ground he covered took its toll. Royal Domain sprinted home to win the event, run on a track made sloppy by a thunderstorm two hours before the meeting began. Royal Domain was the second choice in the betting at 9/2. Mister Childs was second and Harry’s Laura, third. The time for the race was 2min Bsec.
