USED DEAD RECKONING
Skipper Sailed 1600 Miles (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 15. A master mariner, Captain L. Boulton, brought the trading schooner Tiare Taporo 1683 miles from Rarotonga to Auckland by dead reckoning because the ship’s sextant was broken.
The Tiare Taporo came Into port last night. “1 set my course for Cuvier Island and finished about 15 miles south of it, which 1 think is not too bad,” said the veteran Australian-born skipper today. Captain Boulton said it was the first time he had navigated by dead reckoning for many years. “The trip to Auckland took 13 days and we arrived with only enough fuel for another five hours.”
