1000 PUPILS

Bumside H.S. In Difficulties r The Burnside High School . expects next year to accept . enough new pupils to main- , tain its present 10 third forms. . To save confusion among ! parents who may believe that the present professional and ’ crafts courses cannot both lead to higher examinations, the courses will be renamed general with foreign languages and general with ! crafts. 1 The headmaster (Mr C. ’ Cross) said that with the roll ’ at 1000, pupils had been squeezed into the assembly hall by lining seats sideways. i This would be impossible in . the winter term, so as- ; semblies would have to be . split into upper and lower schools. “Will this disrupt classses?” asked the chairman (Pro- ’ fessor N. M. MacElwee). Mr Cross said there would be difficulties in this. Also ; the whole school would not be brought together and all the staff would not be present at the split assemblies. ’ A larger hall was needed. Mr J. S. Whiten said that 1 since the Education Depart- ! ment had authorised some schools to grow to 1200 ’ pupils, such extensions must 1 follow. 5 The secretary (Mr P. J. ■ Halligan) said the depart- ! ment had agreed to consider I a Burnside hall extension in its next building programme, f Mr Cross said the school i also needed a large library, t preferably on the ground I floor (the present one is • upstairs) with ready access i at all times.
