PRISONER SOUGHT
Dash From Car At Gaol
(From Our Own Reporter) NELSON, May 15.
A prisoner on remand from Blenheim made a daring and successful escape from custody in Nelson tonight. He is Joseph Moore, a Maori, aged between 18 and 20.
Moore and a companion, Tre’or Hawkins, were remanded from Blenheim today to appear before a magistrate in Nelson next Friday . on charges of conversion, vagrancy and theft. The Nelson Police Station is classified as a gaol and the two were brought to Nelson by car, arriving in the yard of the police station about 5.50 p.m.
As the car pulled up, both youths threw open the doors and made off in opposite directions. Moore disappeared in the dark but Hawkins was chased by Sergeant P. Matheson, who had been entering the main gates, and caught with the help of two civilians.
At the time of his escape, :Moore was carrying a news-paper-wrapped parcel containing his personal possessions. He is sft 6Jin, of medium build and copper complexion. He was wearing dark-blue jeans, dark-blue cardigan and black shoes.
The police scoured the city and put road blocks on the road outlets to Blenheim and the West Coast.
