Bad Treatment Denied
W.Z. Pres, Association) AUCKLAND, May 15. An official police denial was ' given today to an allegation ; that a witness in the Gillies- ■ Jorgensen submachine-gun murder inquiry received ! rough treatment while being interviewed by the police. Assistant Commissioner O. ■ S. W. Power, officer in charge of the Auckland police dis- ’ trict, said he had ordered full ; inquiries and there was no ■ evidence to support the alleg--1 ation. “During his evidence, men--1 tion was made that the witness had been taken by the • police to the Waitakere ’ ranges. “It was realised during the ' the investigation that some .people could be nervous ’ about being interviewed at 1 police headquarters and Detective Chief Inspector R. I J. Walton made a public statement that the police would go anywhere at any [ time to interview anyone ! who did not want to go to a police station. “At the time of the inter- ! view with the witness, which was mid-morning, the police > were reminded by him of this • undertaking, and in the course of the interview the car was driven to the Titirangi area,” said Mr Power.
