SOLOMON SAYS:
Reginald Heber probably had us in mind when he said, “Failed the bright promise of your early days.” We must admit that five right out of seven was a sharp drop from the sweeping success of the other week, but unlike Shelly we are not prepared to “drain not to its dregs the urn of bitter prophecy.” Thus unabashed, and impenitent, we think that Christchurch will beat Lincoln College, notwithstanding that capping week is over. University A will beat Shirley, and Old Boys, now
on the country circuit as a sin for losing two consecutive matches, must beat Belfast at Belfast. Linwood will beat Merivale; Suburbs, a promising team, should beat Albion, and, if the ground is dry, the University B tyros will beat New Brighton. Marist we have saved for the last. We agree with Voltaire when, alluding to the execution of Admiral Byng, he said, “In this country (England) it is good to kill an admiral to encourage others.” Thus to encourage Marist, we think they may gain their first point by beating Sydenham.
