JUVENILE STAKES
Golden Oriole Again
Golden Oriole gained her third successive win for her 17-year-old Templeton owner, Murray Butt, a son of the prominent Templeton trainer, W. R. Butt, when she beat Chaman in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes on Saturday. Golden Oriole was about fifth, but some lengths from the leaders, for most of the way. She moved up to be challenging four wide at the straight entrance and then came on to win handily.
A filly by Local Light from Petulus, she will probably race next in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes at Ashburton at the end of the month.
Golden Oriole gave W. R, Butt his third training and driving success in the race. He had won earlier with Moss Hall (1952) and Seafield Lad (1957). Her time for the 10 furlongs—2min 44 3-ssec—was three-fifths of a second outside the race record established by Pointer in 1955. Chief Judge, Wexford Scott, Sunset Chief, Donald Dundee and Black Tryax lost their chances at the start. Syncom lost his driver, who recovered his seat and continued the course. After a furlong and a half Queensway and Far Light broke. Chaman led out from Jurist, which made a brilliant beginning from the second line. Lusty Lad moved up on the outside of Chaman at the six furlongs. These two were joined by Jurist and Golden Oriole racing to the straight, with Douce and Efficient next. Golden Oriole soon had control and she won by a length and a half from Chaman, with the same distance back to Jurist. Douce was only a head back fourth, a short length in front of Lusty Lad. Roydon Robin was beaten off shading Efficient, with a gap to Lornaway.
