RACING Julloch Picked To Win First Leg Today

(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, May 10. The top-weight, Julloch, appears to have an excellent chance of winning the Dalray Handicap, the main race on the second day of the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow.

Julloch has topweight of 9-6 but does not appear harshly treated. In his last appearance at Westport he ran a track record of 2min 4 2-5 sec for one mile and a quarter, the distance of the Dalray Handicap, carrying only two pounds less.

The Tauloch gelding has drawn well, a big advantage on the tight Westport track, and will have the services of R. J. Skelton.

His main opposition should come from Marlow, which was finishing on strongly at the end of a mile on the first day, and Foxy Boy, a disappointing runner on Saturday, but one which should be greatly improved by the race.

Marlow won at the distance at Nelson, his last start before the Westport meeting. In the mile on Saturday he was near the rear until the turn, but came with a strong run in the straight for fifth, finishing on better than anything else in the race.

Foxy Boy was having his first race for over a month on Saturday. He showed up coming into the straight but lack of racing told and' he wilted to sixth.

After his easy win on the first day Morris Francis should have a chance. On that occasion he carried 61b overweight at 7-10, so his weight this time of 8-2 is no great imposition. SECOND LEG Winner of the Denniston Hack Handicap the first day, Shanty Town looks the likely winner of the second leg, the Inangahua Hack Handicap, run over the same distance, six furlongs. Shanty Town has received an extra 71b for his easy three-length win and it is hard to see that stopping him beating much the same field he opposed on the first day. His sternest opposition might come from Tanzy, which won a maiden race the first day in good fashion, and from Vivien Robe, which is having her first start at the meeting. The first leg of the oncourse double, the Granity Stakes No. 1 could go to Grand Harbour after the filly’s fast-finishing third in a similar event the first day.

If Shanty Town starts in the Charleston Hack Handicap, second leg of the oncourse double, he should win. He drops two pounds on the weight he carried in winning on the first day. Belle York, a winner over the distance on the first day, also drops two pounds and will be hard to beat. Race Guide, another first-day winner, is the next best fancied.
