CLAN LINE VISITOR
Clan Line vessels are rare visitors to New Zealand, but one of the company’s ships is visiting Lyttelton under charter to the New Zealand Shipping Company. She is the single-screw, 16 knot motor-vessel Clan Farquharson, commanded by Captain J. V. Findlay.
The 9292-ton Clan Farquharson which has already discharged at Auckland and Wellington, is unloading approximately 2000 tons of general cargo from the west coast of the United Kingdom. She
will complete discharge at Dunedin and will then go to Australia to load for the return voyage. Normally Clan Line vessels whose black funnels with two red bands are a familiar sight east of Suez, trade mainly to Australia, East Africa, South Africa, Angola, and Indian ports. They form a large part of the British and Commonwealth Shipping Company merger which includes the Union Castle Line. She is a distinctive vessel with accommodation and en-
gine housing well aft in the modern manner. Like all Clan Line vessels, the Clan Farquharson has heavy cargo gear. She is comfortably appointed throughout and has all modern navigational appliances. The crew numbers ■ 82—20 European officers and the balance Indians from Calcutta.
Captain Findlay has his wife aboard at present. Mrs Findlay has made many sea voyages with her husband.
The chief officer’s wife is also aboard.
