Brief Speeches This Year At University's Graduation Ceremony

The University of Canterbury yesterday conferred degrees and diplomas on about 450 of its students in the most stream-lined ceremony in its history. The formal capping proceedings took one hour and 10 minutes, three speeches took seven minutes, and about three minutes more was taken in singing.

A distinguished visiting speaker had been invited but could not come. The university decided to try a ceremony without the customary formal address. Most present agreed that all requirements of the occasion were met. An institution which has such rich pageantry and handles it so well needed nothing more.

Few apart from those concerned know what a vast undertaking this is. Graduates, diploma-winners, their invited friends, and official guests and the teaching staff yesterday totalled 2200. Most like to watch the procession of graduates leave the university. They then rush to the formal venue, and afterwards the university gives afternoon tea on the central campus. All this now takes a full afternoon without a major address.

This year’s ceremony moved swiftly in every detail, chiefly because of a hidden system of cues geared to the music. When the long columns of graduates arrived at the King Edward Barracks, the visiting audience was requested in the programme to keep its seats. Main Cue Missed

The audience stood, thereby effectively blocking its own view of the academic procession and all the distinctive colours of faculty groups. It did see the princip> officers of the university—Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, Vice-Chancel-lor, Registrar, Professorial Board, and senior academic staff—because they mounted the well-elevated stage. The Canterbury University Choir sang as the procession entered, the audience joined in the National Anthem, the Chancellor (Mr C. H. Perkins) snoke for two minutes and the Vice-Chancellor (Dr. L. L. Pownall) for three, and then canning commenced. Mr Perkins said that relatives and friends of graduates, community representatives, and university staff shared in pleasure at their achievements. Later, he said that some had achieved degrees easily, some by great effort, but none present had failed. The greater expectations of all nations now had in their graduates placed on them a great responsibility. Called In Groups ■ Deans of faculties called graduates in groups of five, they moved across a wide apron on the red-carpeted stage, received the Chancellor’s congratulations and their diplomas, and moved back to their places. The achievements of the University of Canterbury were clear. There were more than a dozen doctorates, scores of degrees with honours, and many senior scholars. Where earlier the warmest applause was reserved for the few of these, this time it was given to the many foreign students receiving degrees. The list is:— FACULTY OF ARTS (DEAN: PROFESSOR H.
