SAN ANTONIO (Texas), April 27. Australia’s Bruce Crampton shot a five-under-par 65 to w’i the Texas Open golf tournament yesterday when Juan (Chi-Chi) Rodriguez of Puerto Rico missed a six-foot putt on the final green, the Associated Press reported. Crampton came from a tie on the final day to take the 5800 dollars first money as the veteran, “Dutch” Harrison, faltered. Crampton had 273 for 72 holes. Harrison was leading by a stroke- going into the final round but soared to a 74 on t’ ? last 18 and fell down the list. R. J. Charles, the lefthander from New Zealand, and Rodriguez tied for second. Charles came in with a 60 and a total of 274. Charles also had a chance to tie Crampton. He needed a 15-footer on the 18th but he failed to sink it.
After the match Charles said he was disappointed at not making up the vital stroke to go into a tie with Crampton—the two are good friends—but. he was pleased to see such good money “going down under.”
Crampton, aged 28, son of a Sydney policeman, came home in a birdie-studded 29, breaking the course record for nine holes. It was his second American title. He won the Motor City Open in Detroit in 1962.
