Hockey Captain No Longer Available
The Canterbury and New; Zealand hockey’ captain, Noel Hobson, has announced his! withdrawal from first class competition because of business. He will not be available for either national or provincial honours this season. Hobson would have been a natural choice as captain of the New Zealand hockey team, which hopes to go to Tokyo for the Olympic Games this y ear, for he has led the New Zealand eleven since 1961. This is a considerable blow to the team’s Olympic hopes.
Hobson began his career as a New Zealand representative in 1950 when he toured Australia with a schoolboy
team while a pupil at Christchurch Boys High School. Later he returned to Australia with the New Zealand team in 1954. He also represented New Zealand in 1955,
1956, 1958, 1960. 1961 and 1963. He has been captain of the Canterbury team for several years, including the famous run of Challenge Shield defences from 1957 to 1963.
