Elderly Man Rescued
Shortly after 8 a m. yesterday morning, a Lyttelton Harbour Board crane driver, Mr Douglas King, of 27 Hands road, Addington, dived into the inner harbour from the end of Gladstone pier, to help an elderly man who was in difficulties in the water. It was not known how the man, aged 70, and fully clothed, entered the water, but he was in danger of drowning. A watersider, Mr Donald Clarke, of 63 Stanbury avenue, Somerfield, went to the assistance of Mr King, who was having difficulty. Between them, they got the man ashore and after examination by Dr. P. A. M. Heath, he was taken to the Christchurch - Public Hospital for observation.
