TO TREAT CANCER
Southland Unit (N.Z. Press Association! . DUNEDIN, April 27. Southland is. to have a supervoltage unit for the treatment, of Cancer from public appeal, money collected in Otago and Southland . when the Southland Hospital Board is ready for it. • The chairman of the Otago and Southland super deepray cancer appeal committee (Sir ’Gordon Bell) said this in Dunedin today. ‘’The position is that funds amounting to £28.097 are still available,” he said. “These funds • are controlled by trustees, and will be used to supply a super-voltage unit to the Southland Hospital in due course, when Southland is ready. In a public -appeal in 1955. when the Department of Health was against the idea of a super-voltage unit for the treatment of cancer in Otago and Southland, £llO,OOO ■was donated by Otago and Southland persons for this purpose. From these funds a 24 million-volt betatron unit, costing £46.770, and later a £15,000 theratron cobalt unit, were supplied to the radiotherapy department at Wakari Hospital..
