In a public -appeal in 1955. when the Department of Health was against the idea of a super-voltage unit for the treatment of cancer in Otago and Southland, £llO,OOO ■was donated by Otago and Southland persons for this purpose. From these funds a 24 million-volt betatron unit, costing £46.770, and later a £15,000 theratron cobalt unit, were supplied to the radiotherapy department at Wakari Hospital..
