DOCTOR TO VISIT N.Z.
Work Among Refugees Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 27. Dr. J. W. Turpin. a 36-year-old United States doctor who is at present working among the refugee families in Hong Kong, will arrive in Auckland on’ Mav 5 for a 10-day visit sponsored by New Zealand Jaycees. In 1963 Dr. Turpin gave up his practice in California and went with his wife and family to give medical assistance to the 200,000 persons who live in the floating city of sampans and junks on the Hong Kong harbour. His clinic is a 63ft con~cargo }unk called Yauh Oi (brotherly love) and from this he treats about 350 patients each day Dr. Turpin’s work among the refugees has grown so that he now has a staff of 32 io assist him. Last year New Zealand Jaycees raised £3OOO to outfit the junk with X-ray. den tai and eye equipment, and during his visit Dr Turpin wil! express his appreciation of this gesture, and will outline the work to various service organisations in New Zealand.
