CONSTITUTION FOR MUSIC SCHOOL
A draft constitution for the Christchurch School of Instrumental Music has been submitted to the Justice Department for approval for the school to be registered as an incorporated society. This would officially separate the school from the Christchurch Schools' Music Association, said the directordesignate of the school (Mr R. E. Perks). The school operates each Saturday morning at the Christchurch Teachers’ College, where it was started tn 1955 by Mr Perks, who is
senior lecturer in music at the college. Primary and post-primary schoolchildren learn to play the recorder or orchestral instruments. In the first year. 120 pupils enrolled. At present, 75 classes are held each week with a total of 650 pupHs and 30 teachers. The instruments taught include the recorder, melodica, violin, viola, ’cello, bass, flute, oboe, and clarinet There are now six orchestras, and a “military band” provides concerted music for the many woodwind and brass instruments in excess of those needed for a proper balance in the orchestra. In all, more than 2000 pupils have had training under the scheme. Several have entered the National Youth Orchestra and the Christchurch Civic Orchestra.
