Record Cheque For Southland’s Wool

INVERCARGILL, April 1.

With one sale to go, the Southland wool cheque for the 1963-64 season is already a record at £12,409,361 and the final figure is likely to be at least £l4m.

The previous record was £11,934,000 in the 1950-51 season when wool sold at prices which had never been reached before and have not been reached since in New Zealand.

The next highest total to that of 1950411 is £10,882,566 last season. In the 1950-51 season the average price a lb for wool

sold at the Invercargill sales was 93.56 d and the average price a bale £l3l 13s 4d. This season figures are well below these averages. For example at the last Invercargill sale on March 13 and 16 the average price a bale was £B4 16s 8d and the average price a lb 58.86 d. The higher total return this season is the result of greatly increased production. In the 1950-51 season 90,639 bales were sold at the Invercargill auctions. At the sales to date this season 152,940 bales have been sold. With one sale to go the final total of bales this season may be double that of 1950-51.

Last season the average price a lb was 42.2 d and the average a bale £6O 7s 5d so this season’s averages are better by about 15d a lb and £2O a bale. At last season’s Invercargill sales 179,000 bales were sold.

To get averages more on a level with those of this season it is necessary to go back to the 1956-57 season when the average price a lb was 57.22 d and the average a bale £7B 17s 6d.
