WEATHER IN MARCH

Record Average Temperature

Warm days and cool nights were the main features of the weather last month, according to the meteorological office at Christchurch airport. The average day-time temperature of 71 degrees was the highest on record. Although most of the month was very dry 11 inches of rain on March 10 and 11 brought rainfall up to average. In spite of many sunny days towards the end of the month cloudy conditions earlier reduced the hours of sunshine to about 20 hours below average. The month was much windier than usual. Winds were gale force on March 20 and 21.

The highest maximum temperature recorded at the office was 86.6 degrees on March 20. The highest at the Botanic Gardens was 84.9 degrees on the same date. The lowest minimum temperature was 34.9 degrees on March 27 at the airport and 36.3 degrees on the same date in the gardens.
