263 High Schools To Be Given Encyclopaedia

Nearly all high schools in New Zealand will receive the latest edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica free of cost during this school year. The project will be officially inaugurated by the New Zealand branch of Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc. today when the Director of Education (Mr A. E. Camp bell) accepts the first set of Encyclopaedia Britannica on behalf of the Wellington. Correspondence Sdwtffi All high schools in New Zealand are eligible for the presentation providing they take pupils to University Entrance standard and have sep erate classes for each form in any one school year. According to a list supplied by the Education Department 263 schools will benefit under the project this year. and the schools’ governing bodies.

The retail value of the sets to be presented this year is £54,704.

The presentation will be made by Mr P. Swain, the managing-director of Encyclopaedia Britannica in Australia and New Zealand. Mr Swain was born in Wellington but f lives in Sydney, from where he directs the company's operations in both countries. The idea behind this contribution to New Zealand education was born before the company had started its op erations in this country and the scheme was discussed with the then Minister of Education (Mr Tennent). After talks on a ministerial level, and with the Director of Education and officers of his department, the company decided to inaugurate the scheme this year.
