TO RESTORE PORTRAIT
U.S. Gallery Finds Funds
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 24. A valuable eighteenth century portrait in the National Art Gallery, Wellington, is to be restored without cost to the gallery by the Conservation Centre of the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. The portrait, “Mrs Devereux,” by the gifted American painter, John Singleton Copley, was brought to New Zealand by Dr. John Danforth Greenwood, a direct descendant of the sitter. It was his wish that the painting always remain in New Zealand, and in 1964 the Greenwood family presented it on loan to the National Gallery. The restoration has been arranged by the United States Information Service, Wellington, in conjunction with the management committee of the National Art Gallery and members of the Greenwood family at Motueka.
