RACING Fit Shipmate Could Emulate Dam’s Feat

Hush Money was only the fourth fancy in a field of six when she won the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Champagne Stakes 10 years ago; her son, Shipmate, will be at nothing like generous odds when he attempts to improve a family, owner’s and stable record in that race next Monday.

Shipmate showed sharp speed, but made it look easy, in a sixfurlong trial on the plough at Riccarton yesterday.

Ridden by his race rider, A. J. Stokes, he dashed over the last five furlongs in 60 l-ssec, the final four in 4Sfcec, and the final three in 36sec. Shipmate will be having only his fourth start next Monday, and if he has footing to his liking he should place his third win in record. Messmate Eager Mr A. N. Smith’s longstriding Messmate gelding has obviously thrived for J. C. TomkiJnson since the Wellington autumn meeting where his two starts produced a first and a fourth. Lady York was one of the most impressive of the stayers to gallop yesterday. With A. H. Eastwood up, she ran a mile in Imin 41 2-ssec, the last half in 51 2-ssec, and the final three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. She joined Coral Chief (Reriti) and Royal Leigh (Mein) after passing the five furlongs, and sped two lengths ahead of them in the straight. On Purpose Fit On Purpose (Wildermoth) and Hushaway (Stokes) were on terms but On Purpose appeared to have slightly the better of it ending a mite in Imin 44 4-ssec. They took just over 15sec for the first furlong but accelerated sharply to run the last half-mile in 49 3-ssec, and the final three furlongs in 37 1Weights, form, and present fitness point to a sound run by On Purpose in the George Adams Handicap at Riccarton on Monday. For lesser lights Donna Gola (A. H. Eastwood) and Magic Ring (Collins) did very well to run a mile 50ft out on the course proper in Imin 44 4-ssec, the last half in 52 2- They finished well clear of Printer (Traecey) and Depending (Low). Donna Gola impresses as a light-weight prospect for the Merivale Handicap on the the first day of the C.3.C. meeting. Other gallops:— Plough Seven Furlongs. Pigling Bland (Wildermoth), Imin 39sec, last three in 40sec; Safe Harbour (Penrose), Imin 31sec, last three, 38sec; Valuate (M.
