OLD MUSICAL SOCIETIES
University Seeks Records Professor J. A. Ritchie, head of the Department of Music at the University of Canterbury, has appealed for information about musical societies which existed in Christchurch between 1850 and 1920.
The societies are: Lyttelton Choral Society (existed 185259), Christchurch Harmonic Society (1858-60), Christchurch St. Cecilia Harmonic Society (1860-62), Christchurch Philharmonic Society (1869-73), Mendelssohn Society (1870-73), Motet Society (1887-99), Liederkranzchen (1892-1903), Orpheus Choir 1905-11), Glee and Madrigal Society (1912-21), Orchestral Society (1871-78), Amateur Orchestral Society (1878-94), Canterbury Exhibition Orchestra (1906-07), Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (1916-22).
Owners of old programmes, minute books and constitutions concerning these bodies are invited to make them available to Professor Ritchie for the use of honours students doing research.
