St. Bede’s Triumph By Innings And 54 Runs

The virtue of bowlers bowling to their fields was amply demonstrated by the St. Bede's College first eleven which yesterday defeated St. Patrick's (Wellington) by an innings and 56 runs at St. Bede's College, on a good, lively pitch.

Decisions in these matches have not been common in recent years, but St. Bede’s had two hours to spare at the finish. On the first day St. Bede's had established a strong position, and yesterday morning this was strengthened by some fine, accurate in-swing bowling by R. Cavanagh. St. Patrick’s, all out for 66, followed on 194 runs behind.

St. Patrick’s second innings was notable chiefly for the spirited efforts of G. Yeoman, a strong hitter of the ball, who attacked with much success, chiefly with well-timed shots on the leg-side. He was particularly severe on a tiring Cavanagh, and the side reached its first 50 in 38 minutes.

From that point, however, M. Laming, who bowled out-swing-ers with admirable control, took charge, and although there were pockets of resistance, the result was never much in doubt. The leg-spin of J.

Boy’s High School took advantage of loose bowling and dropped catches to score 304 for five wickets declared in its annual cricket match against Waitaki Boys’ High School at Oamaru today. At the clos’e of play Waltaki had replied with 42 for three wickets. The wicket was easy paced after overnight rain and was no help to the bowlers. An opening stand of 106 by I. Walter and C. Bull gave Christchurch an excellent start. Both batsmen survived chances, but generally were not troubled by the bowling. Later, G. Henry and V. Bishop added an unbeaten 145 for the sixth wicket. Both hit the ball hard and they, too, survived several chances. When Waitaki batted A. Hounsell worked up pace on the rapidly drying wicket, but bowled too many balls wide of the stumps. Bishop came on near the end, bowling off-spinners, and immediately struck a length to claim two good wickets, including that of D. Wethey who had looked safe.
