Sumner Wins Fire Brigades’ Contest
For the first time since the inter-provincial fire brigades' contests were instituted in 1950, Canterbury beat the West Coast at Walmate on Saturday. Canterbury scored an over-all 176 points to the 89 gained by the Coast
The Waimate Volunteer Fire Brigade played host to the 23 teams competing in the first of these inter-provincial fire brigades’ contests held in Waimate.
Rain late in the afternoon worried spectators more than the firemen—most were soaked through by then anyway.
On Saturday Sumner won four of the five events and gained second place in the other to “scoop the pool” of trophies. Final platings, based on aggregate points, were:— Sumner, 76} points, 1; Rangiora, 36}, 2: Cobden, 33}.

Kumara and Addington Railway, 16 points (equal) 6 Results of the events were:— Four Men Laying Line Of Hose.—Sumner, 61.1, 1; Addington Railway, 62.3, 2; Rangiora, 65.3, 3; Kaiapoi, 65.5, 4. Four Man Trailer Pump.— Sumner, 44.9, 1: Cobden, 49.3, 2; Rangiora, 49.8, 3; Fairlie, 50.9, 3.
Hose And Standpipe With Dividing Breeching.—Hokitika, 61.6, 1; Sumner, 63, 2; Cobden, 65.1, 3; Kumara, 65.6, 4.
Four Men Motor.—Sumner, 50.6, 1; Darfield, 60.8, 2; Kumara, 61.3, 3; Cobden, 62.4,
Hose And Standpipe With Breeching.—Sumner, 505, 1; Rangiora, 53.5, 2; Darfield, 53.7, 3; Hokitika, 58.5, 4. Trophies awarded to the Sumner brigade were:— Knight shield for province with most points and held by provincial team with most points; Jack Steel Cup for team with highest points; Boyd Cup for brigade winning trailer pump event
