“A Grand Job” Youths from the Auckland periodic (week-end) detention centre have begun their first community project They are clearing land and digging a deep drain on a suburban property devoted to helping the handicapped. Their response has amazed the director of the property. “It is a difficult back-breaking task they’re on, and they are doing a grand job,” he said. “They are enthusiastic, their workmanship is good, and they want to come back to see the job through.” Seventeen youths are undergoing weekend detention at present.— (P.A.) Maori Painter In U.K. The Maori painter, Ralph Hotere, is holding his first one-man exhibition this week in the Middlesbrough Art Gallery, Yorkshire. Mr Hotere, of North Auckland, left New Zealand in 1961 after winning a fellowship to study abroad. Since then he has been studying and painting in Britain and the Continent. He spent some time in Italy on a student grant. Mr Hotere, whose work is chiefly abstract, will later exhibit at Durham University and at a London gallery. His exhibition at Middlesbrough—l3o paintings—is the biggest ever staged there, and occupies every room in the gallery.ALondon, March 24. Reedy’s staff party, which will depart from Christchurch on April 2 in a Navy Super Constellation. Altogether this season 26 Boeing planes have visited Christchurch airport. TV On The “Never” Fewer people bought television sets in the last three months of last year. There was a 21 per cent drop in the value of television sets sold on hire purchase, compared with the three months before, and this was also reflected in a much smaller increase in sets licensed in the December quarter, according to the Government Statistician in his latest hirepurchase survey.
