Rail-Car Derailed
(N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU, March 24. The Dunedin-Christchurch rail-car was derailed 100 yards south of Winchester about 9.36 tonight The driver suffered injuries and was badly shaken, but no passenger was injured. A tree was blown down iu the path of the rail-car which tore through the timber and foliage. The front of the unit was smashed. The passengers were taken to Timaru by buses. The rail accident was one incident among many caused by a violent north-west wind. Toll circuits south of Waimate were broken tonight, and were still being repaired at midnight. A house and garage were destroyed by fire during a gale at Hakataramea this afternoon, the Temuka borough was without electric power from 10 p.m, and two fires broke out in the Geraldine County when trees fell across power lines. Radio links were the only form of communication available to and from a large section of the South Island tonight. Telephone and telegraph circuits did not extend south of Timaru. Both Dunedin and Invercargill were buffeted by galeforce wjnds.
