SUMNER'S VICTORY WELL MERITED
EXPERIENCING probably the most successful season in its history the Sumner Cricket Club has won the Christchurch Suburban Association’s senior championship and its two third grade teams finished as runners-up in their grades. The performance of the senior team was a fine one.
It was the first time it had won the senior grade since 1957-58 and in doing so it lost only one match, on the first innings to Beckenham. Capably led by W Rhind, the team had no real weaknesses. Its batting was sound and the bowlers generally could be depended on to dismiss an opposing team for a reasonable total.
The fielding was uniformly good and contributed much to the success of the bowlers. P. Daly, a steady mediumpace bowler, finished the season with a good tally of wickets and was chosen for the suburban representative team. R. Jarvis was another bowler who did well.
T. Smitheram and Rhind were the mainstays of the batting but generally the batting was a team effort, with all of the players making some contribution. Also the team’s ability to score runs quickly was a feature of its play and allowed it to score three outright wins.
The Sumner club has one of the best grounds and pitches in the suburban competition and its success this year has been all the more merited because of the work that the club has done to foster cricket in Sumner.
