BAN ON MEAT IMPORTS
Senator Warns Of Effect On Prices (N.Z P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Mar. 22. Senator Clifford Case (Republican, New Jersey) charged yesterday that American producers trying to limit inexpensive meat imports from Australia and New Zealand were in effect saying that Americans should eat expensive steaks. “But many people cant afford steak,” he said in a statement filed with the United States Senate Finance Committee, which has been holding hearings on proposals to place quotas on meat imports. Senator Case said that one proposal, submitted by Senator Mike Mansfield, of the beef-producing State of Montana, would drive the price of hot dogs, hamburger and luncheon meats up by 4 to 6 per cent. “Our domestic cattle producers are interested in sales revenues from the more expensive cuts of beef,” he said. “Producers hope for a higher demand for steak and other expensive cuts and a rise in their prices, too.”
