RANDOM REMINDER
KEEPING UP WITH THE DOW JONESES
An - address given recently to members of a Christchyrph women's dub dealt with the increasing influence of women on the share market. Mr R. B. Band, ' a lecturer on the functions of the Stock Exchange, told the Soroptimist Club that women in.vestors made up more than 50 per cent or the shareholders if) many companies io Australia and New Zealand and were becoming increasingly awara of their influence in finance. The trend ia dangerous,
hut there seems little prospect of it being arrested. After reading the report of Mr Bond’s speech, we took the trouble to make an Investigation of women investors, asking them what sort of shares they preferred, and how they shaped their buying policy. The answers were revealing. One woman said .she liked to buy shares in companies handling cosmetics and stockings' and clothing. It made her feel, as she slapped on the face cream, that she was getting it cheap. Another investor
Mid she “just took a sudden fancy” to something and it “usually turned out all right.” Two confessed to falling.for photographs of- directors on brochures and one Mid she simply looked at the listings until she -found a name she liked and then got someone who knew about these things to make some inquiries about the shares. There were none who said they studied the stars or their horoscopes. But they had one thing in common. There were none with shares in breweries.
