PROTECTION OF TENANTS
N.C.W. Urges Reform A recommendation-remit, “that the Government be requested to introduce legisla-. tion to amend the Fair Rents Act” was supported by Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women last evening. It was desired that someform of protection be afforded a tenant renting a house or flat: at present the tenant was “at the mercy of the landlord,” stated an explanation of the recommen-
datfan-remit, presented by the Ashburton branch of the council. While recognising the fact that there were some very fair property owners, it was claimed that there also existed unscrupulous ones who took full advantage of the present act, in which no basis for fixing a fair rental on valuation was enforced by the Government. It was stated that cases were known of tenants' taking .a house or flat at a satisfactory rental then being forced to pay a high rental or vacate.
There was no for any obligation by the property owner to find another residence for the occupier.
