FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A very deep depression south of Macquarie Island is moving eastwards, with a disturbed westerly airstream covering most of New Zealand and the Tasman Sea. Forecast:

Canterbury.—Fresh to strong north-westerlies predominating; cloudy and mild, with rain in the alps and some scattered light rain elsewhere. Buller and Westland.—Moderate variable winds, westerlies freshening at times; cloudy and mild, with rain.

Marlborough.—North-west winds, strong to gale in exposed places; cloudy and mild, with some rain later.

Nelson. —Strong westerlies in the far north; moderate variable winds elsewhere; cloudy and mild, with some rain this afternoon.
