INSTALLATION AT SCOTT

Magnetic Survey Equipment

A proton magnetometer built in Christchurch at the laboratory of the Magnetic Survey, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, was installed at Scott Base by Mr J. P. Senior, of the survey staff, who returned this week on the U.S.S. Glacier. While at Scott Base, Mr Senior investigated the possibility of improving the survey’s earth-current measurement programme there and looked at possible sites for a micropulsation programme planned to start next summer.

When the Glacier called at Hallett Station, Mr Senior took measurements of the earth’s magnetic field there, and made similar measuremeats later on Baßeny Tslmmlr

The ship arrived at Hallett almost immediately after the fire which damaged much scientific equipment there, and Mr Senior was able to confirm that although some of the survey's gear was lost enough wss left to enable the station’s magnetic programme to be continued during the winter.
