EDUCATION CHANGES

Importance To Booksellers

It was most important for booksellers to be aware of the changes in taste and education now taking place in New Zealand, the president of the Associated Booksellers of New Zealand (Mr A. Carthew) said at the opening of the annual conference of booksellers in Hanmer Springs yesterday. “Our community stands on the threshold of a new age which is recognisable by greater education, better taste and individual satisfaction rather than mass satisfactions,” Mr Carthew said. He said that no one item played a bigger part in this cultural explosion in the community than books. Because of this, booksellers had an important and vital part to play. “People are recognising that they are individuals with individual requirements in education, information and taste. These individual requirements are best met through books,” Mr Carthew said.
