SNELL BEATS 4 MINUTES
First Time In Africa
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) DURBAN, March 19. New Zealand’s world record-holder, P. G. Snell, claimed another first yesterday, by breaking four minutes for the mile on the African continent. It had never been achieved there before, and Snell showed the way with a time of 3min 59.65ec. The previous African best time of 4min 3,2 sec was recorded by T. Sullivan, of Rhodesia, who finished third behind Snell in the Empire Games mile at Perth. Snell also broke the South African record for 1500 metres with 3min 45sec, ssec better than the old time.
He ran the first quarter in 57.45ec, and reached half-way in Imin 59.65ec. It was Snell’s second sub-four-minute mile this season, and the eighth of his career. He is to run in another mile race at Cape Town on Saturday.
