DEMAND RISING

"Stimulated Interest"

Since ’he Indecent Publications Tribunal ruled the novel, “Another Country,” by James Baldwin, was not indecent, the demand for it has risen steadily in Christchurch. One Christchurch bookseller said there was no doubt the attempt to ban the book had stimulated public interest, but the bulk of the orders had come from serious readers. He thought the initial interest in Baldwin as a promising young Negro writer was changing into a less literary interest. Some copies had been ordered before the book was submitted to the tribunal but these had been sold quickly.

Another bookseller said he had been surprised at the tribunal’s decision but had ordered 12 copies and would probably order more. Although he had ordered “Another Country,” a third bookseller said he had decided not to order “No Adam In Eden” by Grace Metalious. Mary McCarthy’s “The Group,” which has been banned in Victoria, was in greater demand than “Another Country.”
