GULLS AND AIRCRAFT
Action Sought
If drastic measures were not taken, the Waimairi County Council’s dump near the Christchurch Airport would act as a bait leading to the destruction of many protected birds, said the secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs (Mr J. V. Meech) in a letter to the council last evening.
Mr Meech said the department had been approached by the manager of the airport (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson) requesting a permit to destroy gulls which were endangering the operation of aircraft
The council decided to advise the department that it was “most conscious” of the need for the elimination of the seagull menace. The council was “desirous of assisting in the safety aspect by having the hole filled at the earliest possible date.”
