JUNGLE RESCUE

Troops Aid Surveyors (N^.P^.-Rtuttr— Copyright) LIMA (Peru), March 19. A 40-member survey team has been rescued after being besieged by fierce Indians deep in the east Peru jungle for the last week. Rescue troops reached the group last night, and they immediately set off for a naval gunboat, meeting little resistance from the Indians.

Air Force planes yesterday bombed and strafed the In-

dians, as they continued to attack the party, which was encircled on a hill. Two of its members have been killed, and at least four wounded. There were more than 50 soldiers in the rescue squad. They had to hack their way through untracked tropical forests. Torrential rain slowed the progress of the rescuers and it was feared they might not reach the survey team in time.

The last radio jnessage received from the group yesterday said they were still under Indian attack, and added: “They are closing in on us.”

Detective Hit Him, Boy Says

(N.Z.P.A .-R«ut«r— Copyright > LONDON, March 17. A 16-year-old schoolboy told a London court today that a Scotland Yard detective struck him after his arrest during the Greek Royal visit last July. Four policemen were before the Magistrate’s Court, accused of conspiring to prevent the course of justice. They were alleged to have fabricated evidence and to have made false statements.

The prosecution says the policemen planted evidence — pieces of brick—on eight persons arrested during the Royal visit and then charged them with being in possession of an offensive weapon. The schoolboy, Ronald Ede, said Detective-Sergeant Gordon Chalienor hit him and another of the persons who had been arrested. Then be produced the pieces of brick from a cupboard saying, “A present from Uncle Joe,” Ede said.
